School Is Approaching…And So Is Anxiety

School is right around the corner and many feelings of anxiety can start to creep up. Anxiety around starting another school year is normal. As a parent, it is important to help children process these feelings of anxiety. Therapists recommend acknowledging the difficulties in the upcoming changes and school year. Avoid saying things like “ you have nothing to be worried about!”

Things to look out for as a parent that may mean that your child is struggling a bit more than the average “sunday scaries” would be:

  • Reporting they do not want start school

  • Sharing that they will refuse to go to school

  • Melting down in transition from caregiver to the bus

  • Isolating

  • Sleep disruption

  • Catastrophic worries about an upcoming school year

  • Fears about their safety at school

These are all signs that your child’s anxiety might be keeping them in an anxious thinking pattern that is looping.

Therapy can help with talking out some social strategies that might be worrying a child, navigating a new school, difficult classroom dynamics, disappointment around sports tryouts etc.

Give us a call! We are here to help with the transition.
